Caution J6 are at work!
This term our class are really enjoying our new topic ‘Let’s build’, exploring it through Outdoor Learning, Activity Based Learning, Art, Cookery, Science and many more subjects.
We have rolled up our sleeves, put on our hard hats, tool belts and high vis jackets within our role play corner and taken on the roles of the important people on the construction site, such as the construction worker, architect and engineer. In addition, we have been learning the intended purpose for all kinds of tools, designing blue prints and using a cement mixer to create dough concrete and build a wall with bricks.
Our topic has inspired us to try to make our own bricks in outdoor learning using the many natural resources we have found outdoors. We really enjoyed this muddy experience and our bricks are currently drying out and hardening. In cookery we made ‘dirt cup’ desserts, using various biscuits, chocolate moose and toppings to create rows of soil, concrete and rubble. Despite the name these did not last very long in their cups!
In our topic we have been reading many stories about construction sites, one of our favourites is ‘Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site’ by Sherri Duskey Rinker. This book has helped us learn all about the machinery and vehicles used by construction workers and the important roles they have. J6 also investigated what materials were best to create a 3D building in Science and came to the conclusion that brick and stone were the strongest and most robust materials to use. Through this experiment we also realised that a building needs a foundation to be sturdy and secure. We then completed a STEM experiment and used pasta, cocktail sticks and mini marshmallows to make various buildings and structures. This really tested our problem solving skills and perseverance.
As you can tell we have had a lot of fun learning opportunities exploring this new topic- take a look at our pictures below.
