Horticulture in s9a
S9a have been developing their 'green fingered' skills with the support and knowledge given by Horticulture volunteers from Toome community group, Tidal. Students have been learning how to plant seeds, bulbs, young shoots and are watching these grow in the school green house. The green house is now bursting with strawberries, lettuce and nasturtiums to name a few of our growing plants. Students have also been learning the skills of garden maintenance; weeding; brushing pathways, gathering material for compost, repotting and watering plants.
Our senses have been engaged in these activities and then further developed in a connected garden themed Sensology each week, using items found in the garden area to stimulate senses and make connections with their learning. Students have developed an awareness of cross pollination by tasting a hybrid fruit pear-melon and developed plant knowledge by being introduced and encouraged to touch the very soft lambs ear plant.
These experiences have not only encouraged learning in the outdoors but also brought a lot of enjoyment to our pupils as you can see from our photos - Enjoy!
