Local Artist - George Gourley Visits J11
Throughout our topic Northern Ireland, we have been analysing the work of local artists. We were very inspired by the work of the Cookstown artist, George Gourley. We researched a number of his paintings online, and focused on his Springhill painting. Together we observed, discussed and recorded the colours he uses to express in this work. Using a range of media and techniques, along with this painting as a stimulus, we recreated our own version of Springhill.
As a number of people, including our Principal, were so impressed by our interpretations, Mr Gourley was contacted and invited to visit us. He showed us some of his other work and talked about his life and the inspirations behind his paintings. He demonstrated how he mixed and made many of the shades and colours he uses in his watercolours. It was a fabulous experience for the children and they gained so much from it. They openly asked questions and were able to articulate their preferences directly to him, giving some reasons for their choices. Have a look at our photos and you will see the invaluable experience we have had.
