Richard Hirstwood - Developing effective provision in Sensory Learning.
This term, we welcomed Richard Hirstwood back to Kilronan to spend two days working with some of our pupils who benefit from a sensory approach to their education. Richard is an educator who brings a sense of fun, curiosity and learning to pupils through the sensory experiences he provides.
Richard transformed our assembly hall into an interactive learning environment which provided responsive and engaging sensory activities for each pupil. He supported staff, and modelled effective provision of the sensory approach. He introduced pupils gradually to the experiences, adding in elements of changing light and sounds as the pupils became more comfortable in the environment. Pupils were providied with activities which fostered their curiosity about the world around them, through these varied multi-sensory experiences.
Engaging with other pupils, staff and reactive resources helps our learners to develop cause and effect, to experience a sense of control over their world and to have fun. This, in turn, develops self-confidence and is a wonderful expression of pupil voice.
Following on from the visit, we will use the ideas and information to enhance sensory learning experiences for pupils in Kilronan.
Please enjoy sharing in some of the excellent learning that took place with Richard, through our photos and videos. Here you will see examples of pupils developing their communications skills, developing numeracy and literacy foundations, and engaging in parallel play and turn taking with their peers and supporting staff.
