The Colour Monster
This term our aim is to help rebuild relationships, re-establish routines and focus on the well being of each child.
J5 have really enjoyed the story of The Colour Monster by Anna Lenas. This is a great book for helping children visualise different emotions they experience as colours and invites opportunities to explore them. After reading the story we thought of different scenarios that made us feel happy, symbolised in the colour yellow; sad, symbolised in the colour blue; angry, in the colour red; afraid, in the colour black; calm, in the colour green and loved through the colour pink. We got large sweetie jars, similar to the ones in the story and were able to sort the various scenarios talked about into the correct colour of jar. We also discussed the meaning of some big words that we don't hear very often and completed reading, colour matching and comprehension activities relating to the story. The children were able to contribute lots to our class discussions and it has been very useful in expanding vocabulary and helping children express themselves.
We were also able to explore the emotions happy, sad and angry through creative dance and using the parachute during PE. We loved listening to happy music and skipping and twirling around the classroom. When the music changed to sad we moved much slower and when it changed to angry we stamped our feet and threw beanbags!
Have a a look at the wonderful Colour Monster that we converted our den into. Doesn't it look great?!
