As part of our Fairy Tales and Castles topic we enjoyed the story of The Princess and the Pea. We conducted an experiment to see which material would make the best mattress. We had tissue paper, bubble wrap, sponges and air pillow packaging. We set a frozen pea on an egg carton (our bed frame) and then counted how many layers of each material was needed until we could no longer feel the pea. We needed 26 layers of tissue paper, 2 layers of bubble wrap, 2 sponges and only one air pillow. We think the air pillow packaging would make the most comfortable mattress. Did you know you can make play dough out of peas? We added a tin of Bigga peas to flour, cream of tartar and some oil. It make lovely soft green dough which we all loved to play with.
